Kailash Mansarovar Tour Open For Indian Citizens

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra begins on June 30 from Delhi, and five groups of 50 people each, a total of 250 devotees, will participate. A meeting was held on Monday (April 21, 2025) in New Delhi regarding the Kailash Yatra under the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the aegis of the Uttarakhand government. The meeting concluded with the responsibility of conducting the pilgrimage handed over to the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam. These groups will enter China via Lipulekh Pass, 16,780 ft (5,115 m) in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district. According to the official statement, the first team will enter China via Lipulekh on July 10, 2025. The last team will depart from China to India on August 22, 2025. Each of the team will depart from Delhi and stay one night in Tanakpur (Champwa district of Uttarakhand), one night in Dharchula (Pithoragarh district), two nights in Gunji, and two nights in Nabhidang before entering Taklakot in China. After visiting Mount Kailash, these groups will depart from China and spend the night at Bundi, Chaukori, and Almor before arriving at Delhi. The team will be traveling for a total of 22 days on this sacred journey,

Why was the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Restricted?

The increasing geopolitical tension between India and China caused the ban on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. After the 2020 Galwan Valley incident, which resulted in casualties of soldiers on both sides, the relations between the two countries plummeted drastically. Trade between the two superpower nations continued despite the confrontation, but the political engagement was severely curtailed. This led to the suspension of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and any direct flights between the two countries. In this context, resuming the spiritual journey and restoring flight services began a new phase of cautious political engagement.

What led to the reopening of the route to Mount Kailash?

The historical momentum that led to the announcement has been building steadily over the past few years. One of the key milestones includes the disengagement in the friction between Demchok and Depsang. Additionally, high-level diplomatic visits such as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's visit to Beijing in January and NSA Ajit Doval's trip in December further improved ties between the two nations. A breakthrough followed after the meeting of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the BRICS summit in Kazan. Eventually, formal discussion began to resume the Yatra in December 2024 in Beijing between China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Official Opened Routes

The Yatra is organized by India's Ministry of External Affairs from the more strenuous Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and the fully motorable NathuLa Pass in Sikkim. The logistics on the Indian side are arranged by the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam on the Lipulekh route and by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation on the Nathu La route. Similarly, The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) handles accommodation and logistics arrangements on the Chinese side.

  • Lipulekh Pass Route: The high-altitude pass lies at an elevation of 16,780 ft (5,115 m) on the border between TAR and Uttarakhand, near the tri-junction with Nepal. While this route (approximately 200 km) is the most direct approach to reaching Kailash from India, the terrain makes the Mansarovar Yatra physically challenging. Before the restriction in 2020, this route had been operational since 1981.
  • Nathu La Pass Route: The pass at 4,310 m (14,140 ft) is between TAR and Sikkim. This is one of two mountain passes in the region, the other being Jelep La, 4,390 m (14,390 ft). The Nathu La Pass Route is much longer in distance, approximately around 850 km. However, it is less strenuous for the participants as it is fully accessible by road transport. This means you only have to hike the circumambulation of Mount Kailash while traveling via this route. It was operational from 2015 to 2020.

Note: While the MEA registration details and cost for the Yatra have yet to be announced, preparations are underway for the return of the spiritual journey.

Can Devotees begin their Kailash Yatra from Nepal?

No private tour agency operates on the two aforementioned official routes. However, they do conduct the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through a third route from Nepal. Theoretically, this route has been accessible to Indians since 2023, when the Chinese government responded to its border with Nepal. However, the visa and permit requirements, as well as the high cost caused by China-imposed fees, made it a feasible option.

In recent years, some airlines in Nepal have also been operating chartered flights from Nepalgunj to offer devotees an aerial darshan of Mount Kailash. This initiative from Nepal has encouraged India to develop a Mount Kailash viewing spot in Dharchula, near Lipulekh. The vantage point will offer travelers a direct view of the sacred peak located in Tibet.

Eligibility and Application Process

The Mount Kailash Charan SparshTour is open for Indians between 18 and 70 years of age. It is also important to note that the participants must meet the required medical and physical fitness standards. This is due to the challenging nature of the journey, during which you will be hiking through varied high-altitude landscapes.

Interested personnel can register through the official MEA portal of India, which opens in May. The applicants must indicate their preferred route, and once assigned, routes cannot be changed. Additionally, remember that Indian citizens will require a foreign and inner line permit for the Yatra, whereas foreign nationals will need a Tibet Travel Permit and a Chinese Visa.

Preparation and Safety Considerations

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra encompasses traveling to high-altitude regions and challenging terrains. So, we advise you to undergo a medical checkup by a healthcare professional and undertake exercises to prepare yourself for the long journey ahead. Also, keep in mind that this is a pilgrimage, and you have to make progress on a slow and gradual basis. It is best to avoid rushing and rest during the designated acclimatization days to allow your body to adapt to the atmospheric changes.

This is a crucial part of the journey as it prevents the risk of altitude sickness or any medical conditions caused by it. If you have any more queries related to safety considerations, we encourage you to reach out to your respective tour agency. It is also highly recommended that you stay updated regarding news and updates from MEA and begin your preparation for this transformative journey.
