The Ganja - La pass trek is arguably one of the most challenging passes in the Himalayas of Langtang, Nepal; this wedge in the Himalaya is situated at a height of 5160m and even then, the Ganja – La is a major attraction in the Langtang region and it is the one of the prime adventure trips that beckons the bold & brave to venture in the Langtang Region of Nepal as well.
The Langtang Ganja la pass trek starts from Syabru Bensi and ends at Melamchi Pul Bazaar, from Syabru Bensi, we follow the Langtang valley of the Langtang Region to the east until we get to Kyanjin Gompa (3,049 m), where there is a small Buddhist monastery and a cheese factory initiated in 1955 by the Swiss Association for Technical Assistance to augment the locals & their cattle to take advantage of the rich fertile pastures available for their animals to produce good milk to produce quality cheese and on the way, we also enjoy superb views of Langtang Lirung, Tibetan peaks and other mountains seen in the horizons.
We get to rest at Kyanjin Gompa for about a day for acclimatization on this tough trip. The next day, we head up to Ganja La Pass (5160m), from this pass; we can get glorious views of villages and the pristine Himalayas as well.
Tea house facilities are not available in the Ganja La region; hence, trekking in the area is always fully supported and self-sufficient to meet all requirements and contingencies whatsoever. The highest point of this trek is Ganja La Pass (5160m) and this region has so far remained one of the most attractive trekking corners in Nepal’s vast expanse of the Himalayas.
Once we make a trip in the area, we descend from the pass on a steep slope for over 1 km; only camping is possible in the area, & after crossing the Ganja la Pass, the trail takes us to Melamchi village and Tarke Ghyang, where people follow the Buddhist religion so we find many old Buddhist monasteries in the villages and our trek trail continues to descend to Melamchi Pul bazaar where we meet our vehicle and return to Kathmandu for a hot shower & a comfortable bed…the experiences of our Ganja – La trip will ring in our memories for a long, long time to come.
