How difficult is the ABC with Poon Hill Trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is categorized as a moderately challenging trekking trail in Nepal. This journey through the Himalayas can be completed by both beginners and seasoned trekkers. However, you must be physically fit to begin this remarkable adventure. If you have any underlying conditions, we recommend you consult your doctor to prevent any complications during the travel. Besides, like any other high-altitude trek in Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill Trek features significant challenges in terms of duration, distance, terrain, and altitude. During this exciting adventure, you will be hiking an average of 8 km daily for 8-10 days.

Along the way, travelers must walk across rugged terrains landscaped with steep ascents and descents. So, one must be in a reasonable physical condition to properly tackle these challenges with proper preparation. Moreover, as the journey leads you to an elevation over 4,000 m, you must drink adequate water and rest to adjust naturally to the altitude. We also recommend you avoid alcoholic and highly caffeinated beverages as they dehydrate your body.

Is this ABC with Poon Hill Right Trek For You?

This Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill trek is a less challenging alternative than the Annapurna Circuit Trek. But, despite being a moderately challenging expedition, the difficulties of this journey must not be overlooked. Having said that, this tour can still be joined and completed by individuals with no or little trekking experience. However, having prior experience makes the travel more enjoyable and comfortable for you. So, we recommend you commence short hikes around where you live. This will allow you to experience what it's like to hike the high-altitude regions of Nepal.

On the other hand, if you are a beginner in outdoor expeditions like hiking and trekking, the ABC trek is still doable with proper preparation and guidance. Also, keep in mind that there is no age limit for this exciting journey. So, you can pack your bags with your family and begin this remarkable adventure in the lap of the mighty Himalayas. Besides, it is always advisable for you to check up on your doctor if you have any medical conditions. This includes injuries and illnesses you might have. Consulting with a doctor regarding your physical fitness before the tour prevents mishaps and enhances the travel experience. Overall, this trek is achievable for most individuals with reasonable fitness levels. Additionally, with proper preparation and training, you can quickly and comfortably hike the challenging terrains and landscapes. Also, it is equally essential for you to walk slowly and gradually and take breaks as much as you need.

Train to Prepare yourself Physically for the ABC trek.

Trekking is an enjoyable experience, yet it can also be tiring and physically straining. So, preparation and training will ensure a pleasant and successful journey. This includes indulging yourself in physical training and fitness exercises. The travel ahead encompasses long days of walking on rugged terrains at high altitudes. So, we highly suggest you begin your personal training regime several months before building up your stamina and endurance level. Focus on workouts that enhance your leg endurance and cardiovascular strength, such as jogging, cycling, swimming, and hiking. These exercises will significantly help you adapt to the exhaustion of hiking and the physical strain you will experience along the trail. Additionally, you must incorporate workouts that focus on building muscle strength in your legs and core body areas.

This will prevent you from getting injured or straining yourself while you carry your daypack or luggage during the travel. Besides, you can also stimulate the ABC trek by going on long jogs with your daypack and hiking boots. By doing so, you will be able to experience the physically demanding hike ahead of time on the journey. Overall, we advise you not to push too hard and dedicate yourself to training at a gradual pace with adequate rest. Finally, due to your hard work, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and unique cultural experience on the way without worrying about your body.

Useful Information
Good to know before you travel

Spring and Autumn are the best Seasons to begin at Annapurna Base Camp and PoonHill Trek.

In Nepal, the optimal time to explore the high-altitude region in the lap of the Himalayas is during spring and Autumn. Springs begin in March when the vegetation around the Annapurna is in full bloom. The crisp, clear sky offers beautiful panoramic views of mountains, hills, forests, and villages. As a result, you can enjoy the vivid atmosphere and capture aesthetic pictures of the natural beauties around you. As the months go by, the climate and weather conditions begin to change, and by the end of May, the spring season ends in Nepal.

On the other hand, you can also choose to travel during Autumn, which starts in September and ends in November. The temperature during this time of the year is neither hot nor cold; you can wear light clothing while exploring city areas, including Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, while hiking to the base camp of Mount Annapurna, you must dress accordingly to tackle the cold temperatures. Apart from the favorable weather conditions, these two seasons also feature several festivals and occasions. These include Dashain and Tihar, two of the most important religious events for the Nepalese people. So, during your visit, you can also experience these vivid festivals and make countless memories with your beloved friends and family.

How to Acclimatize? And is it Important?

Preparing for this remarkable tour also involves understanding the importance of acclimatization during a high-altitude trek. For starters, acclimatization is a general procedure in which your body adjusts to the increasing elevations and low oxygen levels in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is crucial to trekking in Nepal's high-altitude regions, including the Annapurna region. During acclimatization, your body will adapt to the low oxygen levels and prevent early symptoms of the illness, including nausea, headache, and fatigue. To be able to acclimatize effectively, you must walk in a slow and gradual pace. This will allow your body to adjust to the changing conditions around you.

Acclimatize naturally with these remedies.

We suggest you drink adequate water and avoid tobacco and alcoholic drinks, as they affect your fitness and stamina. In addition, it is highly recommended for you to consume soupy meals during your stay at the teahouses. These include garlic soup, chicken soup, and soups from other vegetables. Apart from this, making periodic stops and listening to your body helps avoid the risk of any illness. You can also contact us with further inquiries if you still have any concerns regarding altitude sickness and the acclimatization process. We can create a custom itinerary for you, including additional rest days for ease, comfort, and safety.

What is Accommodation like during the Trek?

The accommodation establishments during this journey include hotels, lodges, and teahouses run by the local community. On this tour, you will stay in three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. These accommodations feature top-notch services, facilities, and hospitality. However, as you travel far in the remote parts of Annapurna, the lodges and teahouses won't have facilities compared to the ones in the city area. Tea houses are a popular form of accommodation in all trekking regions in Nepal. These establishments are run by the natives and are built with locally resourced materials such as stones and wood. During your stay, you will experience the authentic lifestyle of the local people and learn about their way of life. As you spend the night at these tea houses, you will rest and recharge after a long day of walking. This will also be a perfect opportunity to explore the picturesque Gurung and Magar villages. During your excursion, you will learn about their unique culture and traditions, passed down for generations. Besides, in terms of facilities, the tea houses provide basic amenities and services. You will be provided with a room on a twin-sharing basis featuring a wooden bed, comfortable mattress, fresh blankets, and pillows. Some of the teahouses and lodges in the region also feature an attached bathroom with a hot water shower. However, as you hike up the route, you will encounter fewer teahouses with the attached bathroom facilities. Regardless, you can still enjoy a warm shower as they provide hot water boiled on wood. You must remember that you must pay an additional to enjoy this service. Moreover, you will also have to pay extra for facilities like Wi-Fi, hot beverages, and laundry.

The Food is made with Organic Ingredients.

The meals provided at the tea houses on this journey are locally grown and made with aromatic herbs and spices. The foods are diverse and nourishing to your body and cater to travelers from every culinary background. The teahouses and lodge also offer a variety of authentic Nepali dishes and Western cuisine to keep you energized. So, you must have comprehensive travel insurance as a precaution to protect yourself from mishaps during the journey. As the trek reaches an elevation over 4,000 meters, there will always be a risk of medical emergencies, including altitude sickness. In such unforeseen circumstances, having travel insurance ensures immediate access to proper medical care and emergency air evacuation. One of the significant aspects of having travel insurance is helicopter rescue coverage in case of accidents and severe Acute mountain sickness. In such medical emergencies, an arrangement of helicopter rescue will make a significant difference in keeping you safe and secure. It provides you with timely medical assistance and reduces any unwanted financial burdens. It is a classic example of "Prevention is better than cure," where being well-prepared for the worst-case scenario.
