What are the Three Everest Peaks Climbing?

The Everest Three Peaks are beginner-friendly trekking peaks in the Everest region of Nepal, offering stunning views of the Himalayan vistas. Attempting all of them at once can, however, be a challenging experience and requires a fit body and thoughtful preparation. For your better understanding, here are some brief overviews of each of these stunning peaks.

Pokalde Peak Climb [5,806 meters/19,048 feet]

It is one of the easiest trekking peaks in Nepal and is the perfect choice for beginners who want to experience mountaineering without overexerting themselves. Pokalde Peak is 12 km southwest of Mount Everest and above the Khumbu Glacier. Climbing the peak is not technically challenging, but you still need to have good physical fitness and endurance to tackle the demanding hike in high-altitude regions.

Island Peak Climb [6,189m/20,305ft]

Island Peak, or Imja Tse, is a challenging yet exciting Himalayan adventure. The climb is graded as 2B in difficulty and requires basic technical skills and high-altitude experience. The route is technically demanding, as climbers must cross crevasses and use ropes to reach the summit. The final 150-meter ice wall is the most difficult, as it is steep and exposed. So, learning a few mountaineering skills for a safe journey is best before attempting the Island Peak climb.

Check out our Island Peak Climbing - 13 Days

Lobuche East Climb[6,119m/20,075ft]

The Lobuche East Peak is a demanding and technical trekking peak requiring high-altitude rock and ice climbing techniques. The difficulty is moderate, with some technical sections requiring basic climbing expertise. You must use crampons, ice axes, and ropes to navigate safely over the steep ice walls and crevasses. However, as it is challenging, the climb is equally rewarding, with glorious views of the surrounding mountains.

Please take the following list as a starting point and reach out to us if you have any queries.

Head & Upper Body: Shield Against the Elements

  • Sun Hat/Beanie Combo: A lightweight cap for daytime sun and a fleece-lined beanie for icy winds.

Difficulty Level of the Everest Three Peak Climbing

Climbing these three trekking peaks of the Everest region is graded as 7-8 on the strenuous level scale. It is considered to be a challenging expedition due to the long duration of trekking and climbing in isolated and remote areas above 5,500m for multiple days. It is important for travelers to understand the factors contributing to the difficulty of the climb for a safe and successful journey.

  • Extreme Altitudes: Ascending Cho La (5,420 m), Renjo La (5,360 m), and Kongma La (5,535 m) exposes you to high-altitude regions where oxygen levels are significantly low.
  • Rapid Elevation Gain: You will be gaining 600-800m most of the days, which can lead to acute mountain sickness in some individuals.
  • Technical Terrain: Most sections of the route features ice slopes, steep rocks requiring careful footing and use of crampons and other equipment.
  • Unpredictable Weather: The Everest/Khumbu region’s high-altitude climate can change abruptly and swiftly from clear skies to rain and snow in a matter of minutes. During such circumstances, it is best to avoid traveling as it could lead to getting lost and accidents.
  • Extended Duration & Remoteness: The 24 days itinerary demands mental resilience to adapt to basic facilities and being resourceful as there are scarce facilities in some remote parts of the trail.
  • Physical Endurance & Fatigue: You will have to hike and climb for several days on high-altitude and rugged terrain, which requires cardiovascular fitness, muscle endurance, and flexibility.

The Risk of Altitude Sickness is High, but it can be prevented

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) poses a significant threat during the Himalayan expedition due to the rapid gain in altitude and cumulative fatigue. It is a pathological condition that occurs when gaining rapid elevation above 2,500m. This leads to lower oxygen saturation and triggers physiological stress, including symptoms like:

  • Headache, Lightheadedness, Dizziness
  • Nausea, Fatigue, and Fatigue
  • Difficulty sleeping/Insomnia
  • Fatigue even during rest
  • Vision changes
  • Difficulty breathing and changes in breathing pattern

The condition might sound problematic, but with early diagnosis, it can be effectively prevented and cured. Some of the immediate measures you can take to alleviate the signs of altitude sickness include:

  • Acclimatization: Make slow and gradual ascend during the climbing expedition. It is advised to gain 300 to 500 elevation per day after reaching 3,000m in altitude. This approach allows blood volume, pulmonary ventilation, and red blood cell production to adapt effectively.
  • Hydration & Nutrition: You must maintain a balanced diet with high-carbohydrate and nutritious meals for the increased metabolic demands. We suggest you drink 2 to 3 litres of water every day and avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
  • Natural remedies: Make sure to take frequent rest along the trail to help yourself relax and avoid over exhaustion. It is highly recommended to sleep at least 8 hours a day for your body to recover from the physical exertion. Drink beverages like garlic soup, ginger tea, and lemon tea as it has soothing effects on the body.
  • Medications: Take Acetazolamide (Diamox) under the supervision of a healthcare professional to effectively mitigate altitude sickness and its symptoms. If the conditions worsen, you will be provided with a portable oxygen canister and escorted to a health facility.

Physical Preparation is Important For a Safe Climbing Expedition

The three peaks in the Everest region is a physically demanding adventure, which requires advanced levels of fitness and endurance levels. Your goal should be training at least 6 months before the departure date to perform better at high altitude regions. We recommend you establish a workout routine inclusive of cardiovascular and strength exercises to condition your body. Here are some basic fitness schedules you can follow to stay in shape for the adventure ahead.

  • Base physical fitness: The first step is to incorporate a workout that enhances your cardiovascular health. This includes brisk walking, jogging, treadmill running, swimming, and skipping rope.
  • Training for the climb: Once you have established your base physical fitness, you need to progress to advanced workout sessions. We recommend you exercise with a backpack or follow weight-based training to strengthen your core muscles.
  • Outdoor training: In the final phase of the preparation, attempt a shorter hike or indulge yourself in long distance jogging and marathon to test your endurance level. By doing so, you will significantly enhance your overall strength, cardiovascular and motor fitness.

Note: We recommend you work out 5 days a week for the best result and to keep yourself motivated. Also, you must make sure that you have enough time for rest and recovery. Additionally, maintain a healthy balanced diet and do not overdo any of the exercises.

Do not Underestimate Mental Health.

Mental preparation is as essential as physical fitness for facing any challenges and achieving your goal during the climb. It is important for all the peak climbing participants to face the emotional and physical adversities of high-altitude mountaineering. To maintain mindfulness and a positive mindset, you can follow these effective, simple steps:

  • Believe in Yourself: As confidence is the key for success, you must believe in your ability to overcome challenges and reach your goal.
